Animal Storytime

Early Literacy Tip – You can start introducing letters to your little one. Point out letters on signs, cereal boxes and in other places you notice words. You can write your child’s name and point out the letters in her name. Make it fun to find letters around you. Very gradually your child will learn letters and have a good foundation for kindergarten.

“The More We Get Together” from Singable Songs For the Very Young by Raffi

Book: If You’re Hoppy by April Pulley Sayre

Sing and act out If You're Hoppy.

Mr. Jeepers (sing to Old MacDonald)
Mr. Jeepers was a zookeeper e, i, e, i, o
And in his zoo he had some lions, e, i, e, i, o
With a roar, roar here and a roar, roar there,
Here a roar, there a roar, everywhere a roar, roar.
(continue with various zoo animals)

Book: Move! By Steve Jenkins

Zoo Noises (from Felt Board Fingerplays by Liz and Dick Wilmes)
I’m a bear – hear me growl!
I’m a lion – hear me roar!
I’m a snake – hear me hiss!
I’m a zebra – hear me neigh!
I’m an elephant – hear me grunt!
I’m a monkey – hear me squeak!
I’m a giraffe – I don’t make a sound!
I’m really a child – Hear me laugh!!

The Elephant
The elephant goes
Like this, like that
(stomp back and forth)
He's terribly big,
(Reach arms high)
And he's terribly fat.
(Stretch arms out to the sides)
He has no fingers,
(Wiggle fingers)
He has no toes,
(Wiggle toes)
But goodness gracious,
What a nose!
(Extend arm as trunk)

Book: Whose Nose and Toes by John Butler

What Are We
I can hear an elephant
STOMP, STOMP, STOMP
I can hear a crocodile
CHOMP, CHOMP, CHOMP
I can hear a lion
ROAR, ROAR, ROAR
I can see a parrot
SOAR, SOAR, SOAR

“Shake Those Bells” from Kid’s Make Music, Babies Make Music, too.

We Are Leaving (sing to the tune of “Frere Jacques”)
We are leaving, we are leaving,
Time to go, time to go.
It was nice to see you,
It was nice to see you.
Good-bye. Good-bye.
