Counting Storytime - Tales for Twos

Early Literacy Tip – Counting books and rhymes are great for young children. Not only do children learn numbers and counting but they also learn sequencing. Sequencing is a skill children need in order to understand stories.

“The More We Get Together” from Singable Songs For the Very Young by Raffi

Book: Piggies by Audrey Wood

Ten in the Bed
There were ten in the bed and the little one said,
"Roll over, roll over." (rolling motion)
So they all rolled over and one fell out.
There were nine in the bed and the little one said,
"Roll over, roll over."
So they all rolled over and one fell out...
(This is repeated until you get to the number one.)
There was one in the bed and the little one said,
"Good night!"

Book: Mouse Count by Ellen Walsh

This Old Man
This old man, he played one
He played knick-knack on my thumb
With a knick-knack patty-whack, give a dog a bone
This old man came rolling home

This old man, he played two
He played knick-knack on my shoe
With a knick-knack patty-whack, give a dog a bone
This old man came rolling home

This old man, he played three
He played knick-knack on my knee…

This old man, he played four
He played knick-knack on my door…

This old man, he played five
He played knick-knack on my thigh…

This old man, he played six
He played knick-knack on my sticks…

This old man, he played seven
He played knick-knack up in heaven…

This old man, he played eight
He played knick-knack on my gate…

This old man, he played nine
He played knick-knack on my spine…

This old man, he played ten
He played knick-knack ‘til the end…

We Are Leaving (sing to the tune of “Frere Jacques”)
We are leaving, we are leaving,
Time to go, time to go.
It was nice to see you,
